{"id":2397,"date":"2017-07-13T10:12:24","date_gmt":"2017-07-13T10:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pastoralsystems.co.nz\/photography\/?p=2397"},"modified":"2021-09-12T21:53:58","modified_gmt":"2021-09-12T09:53:58","slug":"christchurchs-post-quake-restart-container-mall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pastoralsystems.co.nz\/photography\/christchurchs-post-quake-restart-container-mall\/","title":{"rendered":"Christchurch&#8217;s Post-Quake ReStart Container Mall and its Vendors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury (NZ) earthquakes, the February 22, 2011 was the most destructive for Christchurch, leaving hundreds of buildings in the\u00a0 CBD collapsed or unstable and requiring urgent demolition.<\/p>\n<p>Large areas of the CBD subsequently became desolate and unrecognisable. This would highlight innovation and herald life returning to the CBD ahead of the main rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 intriguing\u00a0 and colourful &#8220;Re:START&#8221; Mall was established within vacant sections either side of\u00a0 Cashel Mall (above) and opened on October 2011. Each of the vendors have their own story of how they come to be there. Of course, this frequently includes being &#8220;earthquake refugees&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The popularity of the mall&#8217;s architecture\u00a0 has\u00a0 led to an abundance of photographs of the site. However, for historical and cultural reasons, it is important to also record the people of the mall.<\/p>\n<p>This led to my ReStart Mall Vendors photo-series.
